The annual SPCA Garden Tour began in 2005, marking the resumption of a long-standing celebration of home and garden in our neighborhoods which had sadly ceased sometime earlier.  Under the leadership of Pat Bailey with the help of Philip McClain, the inaugural Tour of the renewed event was a great success, with about 100 visitors visiting the lush Spring gardens of eight properties in our community. The tour grew under the leadership of Alexandra Kincannon, with more than 250 visitors from around the region in 2023, in whose memory the 2023 event was dedicated.

The SPCA Garden Tour is a self-guided walking tour showcasing the beautiful landscapes within Shepherd Park, Colonial Village, North Portal Estates, and Walter Reed. Unique gardens of all sizes and styles are on display for everyone’s enjoyment and inspiration and in some years the SPCA has had special attractions such as beekeeping and activities for the kids. The SPCA’s Garden Tour has been featured in several publications such as the Washington Gardener, Northwest Current, Washington Gardener, and Capital Community News.

The SPCA’s Garden Tour is a wonderful way to see the magnificent beautification efforts of our community’s residents.

The Garden Tour is FREE for all current SPCA members and for all children under 12. (Children must be supervised by an adult.) An individual SPCA membership you will get one free garden tour ticket and with a household membership you will get three free garden tour tickets, so join the SPCA now!

Proceeds from the tour go directly to support SPCA’s beautification projects throughout the neighborhood.
